Skijoring (Skiing With Your Dog)
Skijoring is another term that many of us may not be familiar with. By definition it's a sport that originated in Scandinavia where a cross country skier is pulled by a dog, or a horse. It is in the same family as dog mushing, canicross, bikejoring and scootering which all use dog power for assistance.
Today, skijoring is growing as a winter sport for people who enjoy the outdoors and spending time with their pets. And while some skijorers enjoy participating in competition, most people just prefer the quiet solitude of cross country skiing with their dogs.
Skijor belts and towlines may be somewhat similar, but in our opinion the type of dog harness you choose should depend on the type of sport you will be doing.
Until recently the X-back harness has been the #1 choice for most dog powered sports. An X-back is still the most ideal for mushing where the tow line angles downward, but it can lift off the dog when used for skijoring if the line isn't kept tight.
Using the Canadog shorty harness or the Ultra Paws one harness gives you greater control in skijoring, canicross, and bikejoring where the tow line angles upward, keeping the harness securely on the dog.
The other type we recommend is designed similar to a fastback harness, but has a belly strap to keep the dog from backing out of the harness. This is the style found in the Ruffwear Omnijore System.
Ultimately the choice is yours and what you think will be the most comfortable for your dog in these activities.
